What does the HVAC system do?

A car's heating and cooling system handles the important tasks of keeping passengers warm or cool as the season dictates. It also is responsible for keeping the windshield free of fog so you can drive safely when weather is affecting visibility. The HVAC system routes air to the desired location by using a system of passages to control the temperature, source, and location of the air.

Diagnosing

You might hear clicking, grinding, clunking or whirring from within the dashboard. Sometimes this happens at startup, when the system "sweeps" the doors as a self-test, and on other vehicles you might only hear noises in specific scenarios.

This can point to a damaged actuator, but the door it moves could also be obstructed. Another common symptom is a motor that has simply failed and does not work. In either event, it's important to identify which door is the culprit, and then find out if the door, the actuator, or both items have failed.

It's important to check the function of both pieces. If one item is having a problem, it can quickly damage its counterpart, even if it's brand-new.

Identification

Switching between fresh and recirculating air

That's called your recirculation door.

When recirculation is selected, recirculation doors prevent outside air from being drawn into the system. This is useful for helping change the temperature in the vehicle quickly, and it also helps prevent outside odors from entering the vehicle.

Controlling the blend of hot and cold air

That's called your temperature blend door.

Blend doors allow you to get just the right temperature of air. It's a little like the thermostat in your home.

Determining which vents receive air flow

That's called your mode door.

The mode door allows you to select the vents that are blowing air. Common choices include the defroster, the dash itself, or the floor vents.

Possible Solutions

902-332

Air door

Air doors are the movable items within the car's ducts that route air. They're usually a fairly simple door that moves on an axle. They're robust, but can occasionally deform or break, especially at the axle, where torque from the actuating motor is highest. Dorman offers doors and door repair kits for select vehicles.

Air door actuator

The actuator is a small motor that moves the air doors. These motors and doors working together are what allows you to select the vents you'd like, the temperature of the air, and decide if you'd like fresh air or air that's already moved through the cabin.

ADAKIT002

Air door actuator kit

Dorman offers air door actuator kits for vehicles that require significant labor to access all the actuators. Having them on-hand can help reduce the chances of doing the same dash removal to suffer another failed actuator within a short time.

Problem:

When the blend door shaft on certain Jeep vehicles breaks, the dealer repair usually requires removing the dashboard and replacing the air distribution box.

FIX:

This kit saves time and money by allowing the blend door shaft to be repaired in place. It takes advantage of the unused passenger's side actuator mount (on vehicles with dual-zone climate systems) to relocate the original actuator using a custom adapter.
